Burgundy 2008: Be Part of the Miracle

Burgundy 2008: The Heroes Have Arrived!

All great miracles first start with tragedy. In the wine world, the grape grower can experience many problems: a cold, wet spring, a hot summer with rain and hail (botrytis, mildew); and worst of all, rain during the extremely important weeks of September. All of these events happened during the 2008 Vintage in Burgundy.

Alas, the first heroic sign spoke from the north. The famous winds of the north arrived around September 15th, drying the vines and concentrating the grapes. Following the winds, a breath of warmth and feeling of sun wiped out the rot. Later, the sugar levels elevated and acids dropped, appropriately of course.

Two thousand and eight is a small vintage, many grapes were left behind but the vignerons of Burgundy, the only heroes you will meet, have many reasons to celebrate. As Domaine de la Romanée-Conti’s Aubert de Villaine put it: “That’s why we consider the north wind like gold in Burgundy.” And gold in a bottle is exactly what you will find in these precious selections.

The Whites: Almost completely brilliant and nearly all fine.
2008 Domaine Matrot Meursault Perrieres
White Wine; Chardonnay; Burgundy;
SALE $59.99
Reg. $70.00
Add to Cart
A superbly elegant and ultra pure nose of soft white flowers, stone, fennel and lemon rind introduces lilting medium-bodied flavors that possess cuts-like-a-knife precision and laser-like rich focus on the silky finish that brims with a pungent minerality. This is a knockout Perrières and a worthy successor to the great 2007.

2008 Domaine Blain Gagnard Chassagne Montrachet Les Caillerets
White Wine; Chardonnay; Burgundy;
SALE $49.99
Reg. $60.00

As it always is, this is much more elegant than any of the preceding wines with notes of lemon, wet stone, dried rose petal and pear. The medium weight flavors are richer than usual though the classic defining characteristic of a great Caillerets, which is the intense minerality, is certainly present in abundance, all wrapped in a detailed and tension-filled finish that is utterly delicious. Overall, this is more forward than usual but there is no fault in that.

A background note of wood toast sets off an expressive nose of white and yellow orchard fruit, citrus peel and a whiff of earth that precedes the rich, generous and appealingly intense medium-bodied flavors that possess good extract that helps to buffer the firm acid spine on the bone dry and persistent finish.

2008 Philippe Colin Chassagne Montrachet Chenevottes
White Wine; Chardonnay; Burgundy;
SALE $59.99
Reg. $70.00

A restrained and pure nose features notes of pear, white peach, resin and a noble vegetal note that complements well the rich and palate staining big-bodied flavors that brim with old vine extract before terminating in a seductively textured and hugely long finish. There is so much extract present that this has an opulent feel to it though it remains in perfect balance. A very impressive showing.

2008 Domaine Matrot Puligny-Montrachet Combettes
White Wine; Chardonnay; Burgundy;
SALE $57.99
Reg. $70.00

A gorgeously refined and sophisticated nose blends high-toned and pure floral notes that evidence nuances of green apple, brioche and wet stone that marry into rich, stylish and reserved medium full-bodied flavors that possess a seductively textured mouth feel due to the huge amounts of dry extract that stains the palate on the explosive and impressively long finish. This is an example of Combettes at its finest, which is to say a wine that combines good flesh, power and superb refinement. Like the Perrières, this is a knockout.

A very fresh and appealing nose of orange peel, lemon and resin notes leads to rich, round and quite generous medium-bodied flavors that possess good energy and plenty of texture on the only moderately complex but persistent finish.

2008 Philippe Colin Chevalier Montrachet
White Wine; Chardonnay; Burgundy;
SALE $219.99
Reg. $270.00

This offers up the most elegant nose in the entire range with its stone, lemon, chalk and citrus characters that complement the ultra precise and intense flavors of crystalline purity and the same penetrating minerality as the Perrières displayed, indeed this seems constructed on a base of stone that is like rolling rocks around in your mouth. The finish is very much in keeping with the rest of the wine as it’s explosive, bone dry and palate staining. A classy, balanced and harmonious effort that brims with energy. In a word, outstanding.

2008 Domaine Michel Niellon Batard Montrachet
White Wine; Chardonnay; Burgundy;
$219.99
As one would reasonably expect given the superb track record of Niellon’s Bâtard, this is a clear step up in virtually every aspect with another dimension of aromatic elegance and complexity to the ripe and slightly exotic nose of both yellow and white orchard fruits and acacia blossom. The big, rich and sweet flavors are massively scaled yet despite all of the size and weight, it remains in absolutely perfect balance as the outstanding density of the mid-palate buffers completely the firm acid spine.

2008 Domaine Michel Niellon Chevalier Montrachet
White Wine; Chardonnay; Burgundy;
$234.99
A strikingly complex nose that is ripe, pure and airy speaks elegantly of white flower, spice and subtle pear aromas that complement to perfection the rich and mouth coating flavors built on a base of fine minerality, all wrapped in a sappy and explosive finish that oozes dry extract. This is really a stunning effort in what has become a very long line of them for the 76 year old Michel Niellon.

2008 Domaine Marquis d’Angerville Volnay Champans
Red Wine; Pinot Noir; Burgundy;
SALE $75.99
Reg. $90.00

This is decidedly less elegant but actually a bit more complex with iron and earth notes adding interest to the cool red pinot fruit aromas that slide gracefully into rich and full-bodied flavors that are underpinned by quite firm and serious but ripe tannins and excellent length on the long, mouth coating and impressively intense finish. As it usually is, this is a relatively powerful wine with excellent aging potential

2008 Domaine Marquis d’Angerville Volnay Clos des Ducs
Red Wine; Pinot Noir; Burgundy;
SALE $99.99
Reg. $120.00

The most complex and most refined nose in the range with superb layering of cool red berry fruit, floral notes and wet stone, the latter of which is present in abundance on the rich yet beautifully detailed middle weight flavors brimming with minerality and energy, all wrapped in a focused, linear and precise finish of huge length, which like the Taillepieds, is youthfully austere. A classic Ducster that will require 12 to 15 years to be at its peak.

2008 Domaine Marquis d’Angerville Volnay Taillepieds
Red Wine; Pinot Noir; Burgundy;
SALE $101.99
Reg. $125.00
Add to Cart
This is a classic Taillepieds with is very cool and restrained nose of chalk, stone and airy red berry fruit aromas that are very much in keeping with the wispy, lacy and dancing medium-bodied flavors that possess a superb sense of underlying tension on the gorgeously precise, explosive and mineral suffused finish, which is, in the fashion of a fine Taillepieds, notably austere. This will require time.

2008 Domaine Roumier Chambolle Musigny
Red Wine; Pinot Noir; Burgundy;
SALE $75.99
Reg. $90.00

Roumier’s 2008 Chambolle-Musigny – tasted soon after its January bottling – is scented with fresh cherry, its pits, and red currant in a manner that presages its brightness and piquancy on the palate. Forest floor and clean meaty elements as well as hints of cinnamon and nutmeg emerge as this opens to the air, all nicely complimenting the wine’s fresh fruit edge, as does its incipiently silken texture. This finishes long and vibrant, with alluring spice and pure fruit. I would plan to enjoy it over the next half dozen years

This too is strongly reduced. The middle weight flavors are delicious, round and fresh with good verve and punch on the supple and easy to like finish that is solidly complex and quite persistent. This is easy to like as the ripe tannins are well-integrated and this should drink well relatively young.
Burghound 91 Pts
2008 Domaine Roumier Chambolle Musigny Les Cras
Red Wine; Pinot Noir; Burgundy;
$119.99
Dark cherry and its pits and tart skin; black raspberry with its seeds; cumin and mace seem to be electrically charged in the Roumier 2008 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras, with musky floral, savory red meat juice, and crushed stone dimensions on a firm palate adding riveting complexity. There is a certain textural austerity and restraint of sheer ripeness here, but what a concentrated ball of energy we have, making for a finish of spine- as well as tongue-tingling length! Look for at least 12-15 years of stimulation from this.

2008 Domaine Jean Grivot Clos de Vougeot
Red Wine; Pinot Noir; Burgundy;
SALE $119.99
Reg. $145.00

A discreet touch of wood frames strikingly complex, ripe, fresh and quite densely fruited earth suffused red pinot aromas that lead to rich, full-bodied and textured flavors that exude an overt muscularity on the equally explosive finish where the integrated tannins confer a dusty mouth feel to the moderately austere finale. This is an extremely impressive effort but note that even more patience will be required.

2008 Domaine Jean Grivot Echezeaux
Red Wine; Pinot Noir; Burgundy;
SALE $154.99
Reg. $185.00

A more complex and more refined nose that is perhaps not quite as ripe features spicy, fresh and elegant red and blue pinot fruit aromas that possess a distinct floral component and the greater refinement also can be found on the rich and full-bodied flavors that evidence a sleek muscularity that culminates in a powerful, intense and dramatically long finish that somewhat surprisingly, is even more austere. This should be marvelous if given enough cellar time.
